The Film the US Government didn't make ?

In 1942 The United States Department of Agriculture produced a film to encourage farmers to grow hemp. It was a film they later denied ever making.


The film was intended to help the war effort due to the fact that other industrial fibres were in short supply, principally because they were imported from overseas.

The film depicts the history of hemp products, how it is grown and processed into cloth, rope, cordage and other products.




The United States Department of Agriculture library and the Library of Congress were reported to state that no such movie was made by the USDA or any branch of the US Government.



The film was relatively unknown until 1989 when two copies were found by Maria Farrow, Carl Packard and Jack Herer which they donated to the Library of Congress.

The film is freely available for download on the internet and is public domain as it was made by the US Government.

Kayakers escape unhurt after a humpback whale capsizes their kayak.

Two kayakers had a narrow escape when a humpback whale breached the water and landed within inches of their kayak, causing it to capsize and dumping the paddlers into the ocean in Monterey Bay, California.

The two paddlers managed to make it back safely to shore with the help of fellow kayakers. 

Video footage of the near miss was filmed by Larry Plants, a passenger on a whale watching trip organised by Sanctuary Cruises. In the footage a woman passenger can be heard shouting "The kayak! Where's the kayak?" another passenger replies "He knocked it over"  The two kayakers escaped without injury.

In an interview with Inside Edition . One of the kayakers, Wildlife film director Tom said "It was the most extraordinary thing to happen to me". He went on to say, "We were taken under the water by the whale, perhaps in the down-draft," he said. "I think it brushed against me while I was out of the kayak… Neither of us know how we weren’t ended there and then."

The incident was also witnessed by Captain Michael Sack of Sanctuary Cruises. He told local news station KSBW that the two kayakers were paddling through a large pod of feeding whales.

Captain Sack said, "the two were lucky to avoid a direct hit from the animal's massive body, as it could have proven fatal." Adding, "Kayak whale watching can be extremely dangerous," he wrote on his website. "And one should realize that humpback whales are wild animals and totally unpredictable. It’s a very uncontrolled environment out there."

Tips on preventing shark attacks !

Avoiding shark attacks

In light of the recent wave (no pun intended) of shark attacks, we have decided to publish a few pointers to help prevent such a terrifying experience.

But first the good news.
The chances of you getting attacked by a shark are 9 million to 1 and the chances of being killed by a shark are 200 million to 1 ! You are in fact more likely to be struck by lightning, knocked down by a car or attacked by a dog. So probably best not to walk your dog, during a storm in rush hour !

OK, A few Tips and pointers....

Look out for and adhere to warning signs 
Sounds a bit obvious we know, Warning signs are posted on beaches are there for a reason, usually because sharks have been recently spotted in the water.
It’s not a good to ignore the warning signs.


Surf in groups
Sharks generally tend to attack individuals.

Avoid surfing at dawn and at night
This is a popular feeding time for sharks. It's not a good idea to hang around sharks during meals times especially when it is dark and visibility is poor. They might mistake you for one of their favorite meals !


Avoid river mouths and channels  Fish flow out into the ocean in these areas creating an abundant resource of shark feed. 


Don't wear anything that is Shiny, bright, or high-contrasting in color.
Sharks are attracted to sparkling jewellery and bright colors such as yellow and orange because it resemble the scales of a fish.


Don't surf if you are bleeding
Sharks can smell and taste blood from more than a mile away and they can track that scent back to you.  If you get cut, get out of the water. 


Avoid erratic movements and splashing
Splashing around in water can resemble a prey in distress to a shark and attract it's interest. Try to stay calm in the water especially if you spot a shark because sharks can sense fear.


What To Do If You Encounter A Shark
Stay calm and still when you first spot the shark, chances are it will swim away without bothering you.  Easier said than done I know, but a shark can sense fear and panic and this will only increase their desire to attack. If a shark approaches you defend yourself.  The only weapon you are likely to have to defend yourself is your surfboard. Try to place the board between you and the shark.
Get aggressive ! Strike back at vulnerable areas such as their eyes, nose or gills.
Sharks who attack surfers generally think that they're prey.  When  they realize that you are not their usual high fat meals, they usually let go.

California surfer unscathed after shark bites a chunk out of her board

Surfer, Elinor Dempsey escaped injury off California's Morro Strand state beach after a shark swam under her board and bit a 35cm wide chunk out of it.


54 year Dempsey immediately jumped off her board and pushed it towards the shark.
Fellow surfers who witnessed the attack warned everyone else to get out of the water, whilst other surfers who were still in the water bravely helped Dempsey retrieve her board so she could get back on it an paddle to shore.


The Californian surfer had only been in the water about 35 minutes the shark approached her about 2 feet underwater. You can listen to Dempsey's account of the incident in the video (Pat Pemberton)


“First I thought it was a dolphin and I thought, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ ” she said. “And he kind of landed on my board. Then I realized he had taken a chunk. And I was, like, that’s not what dolphins do.”

Supervising ranger, Lisa Remington said .... The beach was closed by officials for 72 hours and warning signs were posting on nearby beaches. 
Experts will later be able determine the size of the shark after the analyse the bite mark and teeth pattern.

A fish and wildlife biologist who was in the area and examined the board said that the shark was male and about 6 foot long.




In an interview with San Luis Obispo Tribune, Dempsey said that she was shaken by her close encounter with the shark and might take a break from surfing. “I’ll be staying close in from now on,” she said. “I’ll probably be on my boogie board for a little while.” She shaken and upset that she did not get long enough in the water ! Adding, “I didn’t get a wave,” That’s the worst part -- I got no waves.”

Dempsey said she had been in the water about 35 minutes when she saw the shark approach her about 2 feet underwater.

Today's EXTREME video - Features Urban Wakeboarders 

Urban  Wakeboarders make the most of flooded Budapest streets !

Todays video shows some Extreme Wakeboarders making the most of a bad situation and entertaining the crowds.

That is until (predictably) the police come along to spoil the fun. Apparently, when the streets flooded an emergency ruling was brought in, stating no one is allow in or on the water ! 

Check out these extreme urban wakeboarders as they slalom between flooded traffic signs,street lamps and guard rails.

BIZARRE video !  Monday 24th Aug 

Cornish surfer beach told to F*ck off back to England ??

Well, I don't know about you but the last time I checked, Cornwall was still part of England.

What is this guys problem...... apart from the fact he obviously failed his geography GCSE' !



In today's video this SUP paddler appears to think Cornwall is not part of England. Telling surfer Phil Brown, who is from Cornwall to "F*ck Off back to England" because  he "shared" a wave off a CORNISH beach !


In the video the paddle boarder can be heard shouting: ‘You drop in on me like that again and you won’t f*****g surf here again. It’s my wave, keep your f*****g eyes open.’ (Charming !)
Mr Brown replies ‘There’s no need to swear.’
To which the articulate SUP Boarder responds, "‘Don’t tell me not to f*****g swear – you nearly caused me an accident then.
I was on the wave. Don’t do it again. Do it again and I will put you in f*****g hospital and that’s a promise." ..... (REALLY ? Chill out dude !)

The "Potty Mouthed" unknown paddler goes on to say "Don’t act like a t**t in the water." ...Hmm, Who exactly is acting like a t**t ???

The very patient Mr Brown  (somewhat too impatient in my opinion) tries to apologies and it is then that "potty mouth" responds with... " F*** off back to England you ****."( ......very classy !)

 
Mr Brown then points out that he is in fact from Cornwall, the man responds in a strong Liverpudlian accent ? ..... ‘I was born here’.
Mr Brown then tells the man "it gives you no more right  to the waves". Can you guess what the unknow paddlers retort is ????

Yep you guessed it..................................F**K OFF !

Australian Mick Fanning returns to competitive surfing. 

Australian champion surfer Mick Fanning returned to professional competition yesterday and celebrated with a win. 

It is less than four weeks since his famous fight with a great white shark in the J-Bay Open Finals in South Africa, but is didn' seem to affect his concentration form. He looked composed and focused nailing his first heat with two five plus scores in the Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

Fanning beat fellow Australian Adam Melling and Tahitian Taumata Phuetini in his heat with a total of 12.17.
The event was called postponed later in the afternoon due to bad weather conditions It is thought that it will resume tomorrow.

Fanning told ABC news, "It was just great to get back in the singlet and focus on surfing again. There had been so much hype about the incident at J-Bay and so much media attention. I just wanted to move on."

Australian, Mick Fanning donates $75,000 TV fee to injured surfer in NSW shark attack.

The three - times champion was interviewed on Channel Nine's 60 minutes about the news that his fellow surfer and friend Mathew Lee had suffered a vicious attack by a great white shark. After the interview it was reported that fanning will donate the $75,000 television appearance fee to Mathew , who was attacked by the shark in Ballina early last month.

It is just over two weeks now since Mick Fanning survived a very precarious 
encounter with a shark himself.  Although Fanning walked away relatively unscathed from his encouter, Lee was less fortunate and has had extensive surgery . It is reported that he suffered serious nerve damage in both lower legs. He remains at the Gold Coast University hospital.

Nine network chief executive, David Gyngell,  pledged a further $25,000 to Lee for his ongoing treatment.

Lee’s family posted their thanks on A Facebook page set up to support Mathew. At the time of writing the Facebook page has over 4600 likes.

“Mick Fanning and David Gyngell,” also posted  the following on the Facebook page - “No words can describe how grateful we are for the generous donation.”

Five weeks after the  attack, Mathews partner Suzy Gerada posted a Facebook update on his condition in hospital. The statement read ....

'He suffered major nerve damage which has been operated on but at this stage it is still unclear what the impact will be on his long term rehabilitation', the photo captioned.

'He has also been recovering from infection associated with his injuries.'

'It is hoped that in the not too distant future Mat will be admitted to Ballina Hospital to commence rehabilitation. '

Australian  Mick Fanning vows to return despite shark attack.

Mick Fanning has vowed to return to surfing despite fighting off a shark during the J-Bay Open Finals in South Africa.

Mick, who was clearly shaken by the ordeal, thanked well wishers for their support and spoke to reporters on his return back home to Sydney, yesterday afternoon.

He thanked Julian Wilson, his "warrior" mate and fellow competitor  who bravely swam towards him during the attack..

"I guess someone was looking out for me. To walk away from a shark attack with not a scratch on you, it's a miracle really," said Fanning. When asked if he had a message for the shark. He replied: "Thanks for not eating me". He went on to say, "I guess someone was looking out for me.

Dramatic footage of the ordeal (Above) shows the moment the shark attacks, knocking Fanning of his board "It sort of came up and went for the tail of my board," he said. "I don't know why it didn't bite. It just kept coming back."

"I was on top of it, trying to put my board in between us," he said. "I don't know if I punched it hard or if they were baby punches. I just went into fight or flight."

Fanning called his survival a "miracle" and that he was "just lucky it wasn't my time".

"Surfing's got me through the hardest times in my life, so to turn my back on surfing wouldn't be right," he said.

"I felt so insignificant. The thing was so powerful and it just moved so fast. To walk away from a shark attack with not a scratch on you, it's a miracle really. You just count your lucky stars."

He said surfers were in the sharks' domain, but vowed to return to surfing and J-Bay in the future.

Julian Wilson spoke of the horror of watching helplessly as his friend and mentor was "manhandled" by the shark. "I honestly froze and ... I was kind of freaking out," Wilson said. "I came over the wave, praying he would be there and not ... with blood everywhere."The worst case scenario is in your head, I felt like I couldn't get there in time. It was such a horrific feeling"

70 km/h concrete drainage ditch kayak race !!!

Watch Ben Marr and Rush Sturges race their kayaks downhill at 70 km/h in a concrete drainage ditch.

The video below was taken by Ben Marr on his GoPro Cameras.It shows kayaker Ben Hurtling down a drainage ditch at speeds of up to 34 miles per hour (55 km/h)  before dropping into Lions Bay in British Columbia.

The footage for this video was shot by Ben Marr and Rush Sturges on their GoPro cameras  and shows the two racing at speeds of up to 70 km/h. The two kayakers made it safely down the drainage ditch in just under a minute before being deposited into Lions Bay.

The recordings were taken with helmet- and kayak-mounted GoPro cameras.

Pro kayaker Dane Jackson Just loves chasing waterfalls

The footage below, was shot in Veracruz, Mexico and shows Jackson with his hot pink kayak showing exactly what he can do.  Watch as he throws his kayak and paddle off a cliff into a river foaming with whitewater.

He then jumps off the cliff !

Follow his amazing journey as he paddle down numerous waterfalls, which get progressively larger. He narrates the video and can be heard commenting: "Before I drop into a waterfall, I run through every scenario in my head. My heart is pounding out of my chest. ... Everything goes blank."

Dane is one of the best freestyle kayakers in the world. He will amaze you with his tricks like Airscrews, Nose Blunts and McNastys which he performs at the drop of a hat.

He undoubtedly has talent in abundance and has already won more world titles at the tender age of 19 than most career kayakers.

In the footage below Dane shows off some incredible playboating skills - When all the competitive events were finished in the GoPro games, he launches in to perform a few tricks for the crowd. 

19 year old Dane was born into a family of professional kayakers. His philosophy in life is "Do what you love and love what you do.

Canada’s de Jonge wins kayaking gold, then a surprise bronze

Canada’s Mark de Jonge had fruitful day at the Pan Am games yesterday

The reigning world champion and record holder won gold in 200-metre kayak sprint. An event he was expected to win.

The surprise of the day came he and Pierre-Luc Poulin teamed up for the K-2 200m kayak - an event that is not theirs and just managed to clinch 3rd place.

They crossed the line neck and neck with the Brazilians and clocked in five-one thousandths of a second behind them.

“I was just doing the math in my head,” he said, afterward.

“And it’s under two inches between us. Cameras can’t pick that up.”

It wasn't until 45 minutes later — after the Canadians had talked to the media about just missing out on a  bonus medal — the announcement came through that they had, in fact, according to the international sprint kayak rules, tied for bronze.

De Jonge pick up the two medals the fact he is still not at peak fitness, because he is still building up to peak at the world championships in next month. So he will be confident heading to Milan.

“I raced well. I’m really proud of myself today,” he said. The 31 year old Halifax paddler is at the peak of his career. He missed 2004 and 2008 Olympics by a single spot, winning his first a medal (Bronze) at his Olympic debut in 2012.

Tuesday’s five-medal day brought Canada’s medal total to 10.Jason McCoombs picked up silver in the men’s 200m. Laurence Vincent-Lapointe won gold in the women’s 200m canoe event. Michelle Russell took silver in the women’s 200m kayak and  canoe.

Kayakers take to flooded streets

Residents take to kayaks as thunderstorms cause floods outside 

Severe thunderstorms just outside Calgary cut power to many homes on Sunday morning.

Residents In Langdon  took to the flooded streets in their kayaks.

The storms also affected Chestermere causing power failure with many residents having to deal with flooded basements flooded many basements.

Chestermere resident Bruce McAllister, said he helped a friend whose basement on Victoria Beach Bay had turned into a “lake,” with 2.5 metres of water. He said the entire crescent was under water.   “It’s pretty near up to the ceiling, I would guess, in the basement,” McAllister said.“A number of neighbourhoods are dealing with it,” he said. “It was just too much rain too fast.”

According to Environment Canada, a band of the storms hovered over a swath of southern Alberta for hours.

Weather specialist Brian Proctor said Chestermere was hit hardest,  223 millimetres had drenched the city by 10 a.m., though hail could have exaggerated the amount. He said he could safely estimate more than 150 mm of rain hit the city just east of Calgary. Flights at the Calgary International Airport were grounded but allowed to resume  at 11.00 a.m. The storms began around 6.00am and lasted  over three hours.“It was really a number of storms hovering over the same area, hour after hour,” Proctor said.

Calgary had less rainfall, fewer than 5 mm falling, but several thousand homes lost power and many had flooded basements.

Three homes were hit by lightning causing firemen to attend.
